Discover more about the Titanic’s maiden voyage that turned from triumph to tragedy at Swansea Museum

On 14 April 1912, the ship that was deemed unsinkable disappeared beneath the chill waters of the Atlantic just two hours and forty minutes after striking an iceberg, taking with her the hopes, dreams and souls of the 1523 victims of the tragedy.

Now Swansea Museum brings the story to life, displaying a small selection of material as a further tribute to the Welsh passengers and crew that became victims of that maiden voyage.

The Titanic exhibition will be on display for one week only from Wednesday 11 - Wednesday 18 April 2012. So don’t miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime to see memorabilia from the great British passenger liner.

Enjoy a talk from world-renowned glaciological expert at Swansea Museum

Swansea Museum is holding the latest in a series of Antarctic talks on Wednesday 22 February, in association with the current Antarctic Exhibition. 

Dr Nicholas Barrand from the British Antarctic Survey will be giving a presentation on Glaciology & Climate Change focusing on the behaviour of glaciers and ice sheets due to global warming, current aspects of research at the British Antarctic Survey, and the day-to-day realities of living and working in polar environments.

Admission is free with the talk beginning at 1.00 pm.

Edgar Evans died 100 years ago today during Captain Scott's ill-fated South Pole expedition

Did you know that 100 years ago today Gower-born Edgar Evans died while hiking back from the South Pole?

Petty Officer Evans was part of Captain Scott's expedition party which made it to the South Pole in 1912.  However, Evans died at the foot of the Beardmore Glacier exactly a month after he'd reached the Pole.

Explore the link between South Wales and the Jewish refugees of World War 2 at new Archives exhibition

The story of Jewish refugees who came to live in South Wales during the turbulent years before the Second World War will be told in a new exhibition at Swansea Civic Centre.

'Jewish Refugees in South Wales, 1933 -1945', an exhibition by West Glamorgan Archive Service, explores the emotional accounts of the Jewish adults and children who found sanctuary in South Wales after escaping the Holocaust in Nazi-occupied Europe and the subsequent contribution they had on the economy and local culture.

The exhibition will be situated in the foyer of Swansea Civic Centre from 10 January to 5 February and is taking place in conjunction with commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day, held every year in the UK on 27 January.

In January, Swansea Museum welcomes two new exhibitions to commemorate the centenary of the infamous Antarctic expeditions of 1912.  

Opening on 7 January, Cold Recall: Reflections of a Polar Explorer, delves into Roald Amundsen's journey to become the first person to reach the South Pole.  Geir Klover, Director of the Fram Museum in Oslo, will also be presenting a talk on the exhibition on 19 January.  (n.b. Places must be booked in adavance)

Isle of Wight Festival Exhibition at Swansea Museum

You can now experience the majesty of the 1970 Isle of Wight Music Festival, synonymous with performances from music legends Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Jethro Tull. 

All through the lens of stills photographer, BBC newsreel cameraman and film director Charles Everest who immortalised the festival in a series of evocative photographs.

This stunning festival is running at Swansea Museum until 31 December.

Visiting the air show this weekend? It's also your last chance to see the Following the Flame exhibition

If you're visiting Wales National Air Show why not pop into the Brangwyn Hall to look around the free Following the Flame exhibition, which is shaped in tribute to the famous Olympic rings?

It includes words, pictures and voices telling the stories of Welsh Olympians and Paralympians like Lynn Davies, Colin Jackson and Tanni Grey-Thompson.

Two Olympic torches, Tanni Grey-Thompson's winning wheelchair and a selection of Olympic medals are also among the memorabilia.

The exhibition is open every day from 10.00am to 4.30pm and runs until next Sunday 10 July.

Exciting new exhibitions at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery

Two new exhibitions are being launched at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery tomorrow.  "I know something about love" brings together internationally recognised artisits Yang Fudong, Shirin Neshat and Christodoulos Panayiotou to investigate the theme of love in different times and cultures.

While Laura Ford's "Beast and Other Works" offer alluring, tactile objects made out of various textile materials.

Both exhibitions run from 17 June - 4 September and entry is completely free.

Following the Flame - Olympic and Paralympic exhibition film clip on ITV Wales

Have a look at the film that ITV Wales made about Following the Flame Olympic and Paralympic exhibition at the Brangwyn Hall, Swansea.

The ITV crew was at the launch yesterday, along with the Olympians and Paralympians featured in the exhibition and many of their friends and family members.

Following the Flame is open to the public every day until 10 July, 10.00am – 4.30pm and entry is free.

It's going to be a busy weekend in Swansea...

It is definitely going to be a fun packed weekend, there is no excuse to say "you are bored" or there is nothing to do".

The Gower Walking Festival continues through the weekend until 19 June, the Gower Folk Festival is taking place from 10-12 June and the Big Clydach Tea Party is on Saturday 11 June.

If you are looking for musical events then 2 of the biggest events in Wales take place this weekend - Escape into the Park and JLS live at the Liberty Stadium. 

Finally, the Following the Flame exhibition starts on Sunday 12 June at the Brangwyn Hall.

A free exhibition which provides the history of Welsh athletes through the Olympic and Paralympic games starts this Sunday 12 June in the Brangwyn Hall.

Head on down to the Following the Flame exhibition between 10am - 4.30pm to view many exciting events and displays such as Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson's chair, olympic medals and interviews with Welsh Olympians and Paralympians.

If you are a proud Welshman or woman or have a keen interest in the Olmpics and Paralympics, or just want to get excited for next years 2012 Olmpics then this exhibition is definitely for you.

 

Swansea Bay Summer Festival 2011 in May

A whole host of events have now been added to the Swansea Bay Summer Festival 2011.  Events taking place during May include a Welsh Cheese and Cider Festival in Gower Heritage Centre, Race for Life, LC Swansea Bay 5k, a Midnight Sleep Walk and Clyne in Bloom.

Ffilm 3 exhibition will continue until May in the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery

The Glynn Vivian has let us know that Ffilm 3, the contemporary film and video exhibition will now continue until Sunday 1 May.

Ffilm 3 includes works by UK artists such as Mark Wallinger and John Wood alongside Wales based artists Peter Finnemore and Holly Davey.

Copper Day in Swansea, Saturday 5 March

This Saturday (5 March) is Copper Day in Swansea, and there are a whole host of events and activities going on throughout the city between 10am - 4pm, as part of St David's Week 2011.

Dylan Thomas sketches on view at the Dylan Thomas Centre

Drop in to the Dylan Thomas Centre to see a series of drawings by artist Dodie Masterman of Dylan Thomas.

Some have Dylan's doodles on them and one of the sketches clearly shows Dylan's signature, which he has incorporated into the drawing itself. 

Dodie's son Fairless Masterman has loaned the sketches and they can be seen during the Dylan Thomas Festival and beyond, as part of the exhibition about Dylan.

The Road Ahead exhibition opens in Swansea Museum

Swansea Museum's new exhibition opens today, celebrating motoring on two and four wheels from the 19th century onwards.

Come and discover how BP, Stirling Moss and Ford have been connected with the Swansea area.

Catch the exhibitions at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery

A Glimpse into the Archives, a fascinating exhibition ends this Sunday at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, June 27.

It includes designs, drawings and artefacts from the process of stained glass making and has been hailed as a ‘must-see exhibition’ by recent visitors. 

There’s something to keep the young visitors entertained too, as free art books are available for children from 5 to 12+ years. 

Admission is free and everyone is welcome.  The gallery is open from 10am – 5pm, Tuesday to Sunday.

Dr Who comes to Swansea

We are very excited!  Swansea will be hosting a Dr Who roadshow this easter.  Between Thursday 1 April and Saturday 3 April, Castle Square will become Dr Who heaven (well, fo fans anyway!) where you will have the chance to view exclusive footage, see some scary monsters and even have your photo taken through the giant vortex.
