Give them names and you could win!

They’re not quite the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles we all know and love from the 90s, but Plantasia’s newest residents are definitely something special.

This April Plantasia welcomed five Egyptian Tortoises to their collection, there are only an estimated 7,500 in the world and Plantasia has taken them in as part of a breeding program.

These critically endangered tortoises are currently nameless and Plantasia need your help to name them in their half term competition. If your name is one of the chosen five, you could win a small gift.

And don’t forget this month get a half price annual pass to the tropical haven.

Nominate a young person for a High 5 Award

Do you know any young people who help out in their community?  Or maybe they’ve achieved success or turned their own lives around and overcome a difficult situation?  

If so, don’t forget to get your nominations in for this year’s prestigious High 5 Awards by 17 July 2013. 

Swansea City star Leon Britton is ambassador for these awards which recognise and celebrate young people’s achievements and enable them to be an inspiration to others. 

All you need to nominate online and details of prizes is available at www.swansea.gov.uk/high5awards which are organised by Swansea Council and kindly supported by Gower College.

Gardens at the ready, its competition time...

If over the next few weeks you’re going to be spending a lot of time in your garden getting it ready for summer, why not enter this year's Swansea in Bloom competition?  

It runs throughout May and local residents, businesses and community groups can all enter.

Categories include best allotment plot, best front garden, best hanging basket and for those under 16 years,  the Young Gardeners' Sunflower Competition.

The competition is free, easy to enter, and don’t worry you don’t need to be an expert to get involved!

Meet the historic Bristol Channel Pilot Cutters...

Visitors to Swansea Museum’s pontoon in the Marina are in for a treat on Friday 24 May as a number of vessels from the Bristol Channel Pilot Cutters Owners Association sail into Swansea Bay. 

From  11.00am - 3.00pm you will be able to hop on board and talk to the owners and crew of Mascotte, Alpha, Olga, Dolphin and Peggy and take a full look around the  vessels.

There will also be an opportunity to sail aboard the Pilot Cutters in Swansea Bay between 3.30pm - 7.30pm. However, places are limited and will need to be booked in advance by contacting Swansea Museum on 01792 653763 or calling in to the museum in person.

Cheese, Cider, Hugh Jackman and Science raps this weekend...

The Gower Heritage Centre’s Cheese and Cider Weekend starts this Saturday with a large selection of locally made ciders and cheeses. And don’t forget to check out the centre’s very own range of ciders pressed in their 120-year-old cider press, definitely worth a sip!

Science and music, not two things you’d usually put together, but this Saturday 11 May at the National Waterfront Museum is holding a Street Science: Space Rap for kids aged 7-12 years. Science Rapper Jon Chase delves into the Earth’s relationship with space.

And don’t forget this Saturday 11 May, you can watch the 2012 blockbuster Les Misérables in the shadow of the beautiful 900 year old Oystermouth Castle.

Join the Dylan Thomas Twitter exchange...

After the success of their Under Milk Wood Twitter exchange in October 2012, the Dylan Thomas Centre aims to get #MilkWood trending this May!

To celebrate the 60^th anniversary of the first stage performance of Dylan Thomas' Under Milk Wood, the Dylan Thomas Centre will be tweeting extracts from the famous play this Friday 10 May.

The centre will be tweeting throughout the course of the day. Follow @DTCSwansea and use the #MilkWood hashtag to take part in the discussion.

Spring is finally in full swing and bank holiday Monday is just around the corner.

On Monday 6 May head down to Singleton Park where there will be a Classic Car Show from 10.00am - 4.00pm, with a fantastic selection of cars, trade-stands and a fun fair to keep the kids entertained.

If you fancy doing something a little more creative, then why not try your hand at air dry clay pottery at Swansea Museum’s free workshop from 11.00am.

And don’t forget Oystermouth Castle is now fully open for the summer, and this Monday you can get up close to some fascinating birds of prey.

May Day Bank Holiday Fun in Swansea...

There’s lots to do this weekend in Clyne Gardens. On Saturday take a guided tours through Clyne Gardens from 2.00pm and on Sunday enjoy some band concerts and childrens activities from 3.00pm.

If you’re looking for something a little different to keep the family entertained this bank holiday, then Pop-Up Cinema could be for you, watch the 2007 blockbuster Transformers on the big screen in either Ynystawe Park (On Saturday) or at Park William, Loughor (on Sunday).

And don’t forget to take a ride on the Swansea Bay Rider along the prom from Blackpill to Mumbles.

Explore Swansea’s Museums this weekend…

This Saturday and Sunday take any unwanted books, CDs or vinyl down to the National Waterfront Museum where they’re holding a Book Swap. Dr Rhianydd Biebrach will be giving a free talk about Welsh Monuments on Saturday from 11.00am and the touring exhibition from the Josef Herman: Llafur - Imaging the Labourer is running until 22 September.

At Swansea Museum explore the history of Ewenny Pottery until 2 June. This exhibition brings together Ewenny pottery from Museum and private collections along with unique film and photographic material.

And don’t forget to take a look around Swansea Museums permanent exhibitions including Hor the Mummy, who was gifted to Swansea Museum in 1888.
